Variety and grade matter

Rice is traded in many varieties and grades, and buyers in different markets look for very different products. Long-grain, parboiled, fragrant and broken rice each have their own specifications and end uses.

ESN London Ltd begins every rice enquiry by establishing the variety, the grade and the proportion of broken grains, along with the quantity, packaging, origin and delivery terms, so that a requirement is properly understood before any next steps are agreed.

Benefits

What our rice broking provides

  • Variety and grade clarity

Rice descriptions differ between markets. Defining the variety and broken content precisely avoids mismatched expectations.

  • Packaging considered

Rice is commonly shipped in bags, so bag size, material and marking are discussed early.

  • Origin and crop-year awareness

Origin and crop year affect quality and availability, so preferences are noted at the start.

  • Documentation in view

Certificates required by the importing country are raised before a discussion progresses.

How it works

How a rice enquiry progresses

Variety, grade and packaging shape most rice discussions.

  1. Define variety and grade

We confirm the variety, the grade and the percentage of broken grains, along with the market the rice is intended for.

  2. Confirm packaging and shipment

Quantity, bag size, marking and shipment method are agreed, together with the delivery basis and destination.

  3. Confirm parties and documents

Company information and the certificates required at destination are confirmed before introductions are made.

  4. Discuss and agree next steps

Terms are discussed between buyer and seller, and the next steps are confirmed so that both sides are clear.

Good to know

Broken content, packaging and certification

Rice is usually graded by the percentage of broken grains it contains, alongside parameters such as moisture, chalky and damaged grains, and foreign matter. These are typically verified by independent inspection before shipment.

Much of the rice traded internationally is shipped in bags, by container or by vessel. Importing countries commonly require phytosanitary certificates and certificates of origin, and some require fumigation certificates. Confirming these requirements early helps avoid delays.

FAQs

Rice: common questions

More general questions are answered on our FAQs page.

Which types of rice can I enquire about?

Enquiries commonly concern long-grain white rice, parboiled rice, fragrant varieties such as basmati and jasmine, medium- and short-grain rice, and broken rice. Please call to discuss your specific requirement.

What does the broken percentage mean?

It is the proportion of grains broken during milling, and one of the main measures of rice grade. A lower percentage generally indicates a higher grade: 5% broken rice is a higher grade than 25% broken.

What is parboiled rice?

Parboiled rice is partly boiled in the husk before milling. The process firms the grain, helps it hold its shape when cooked and retains more of its nutrients than ordinary white rice.

How is rice packed and shipped?

Rice is most often packed in bags of various sizes and shipped by container or by vessel. Please tell us your packaging and shipment requirements when you enquire.
