Grade, assay and provenance

Metals and minerals are priced and traded according to their grade, and that grade must be demonstrated, usually through independent sampling and assay. For precious metals, documented provenance is just as important.

ESN London Ltd approaches these enquiries with that in mind. We establish the material, its form and grade, the quantity and the documentation available before discussing any next steps.

Commodities covered

Lithium

A critical material in battery manufacture and energy storage, traded both as mineral concentrate and as refined chemicals.

Enquiries commonly concern

  • Spodumene concentrate
  • Lithium carbonate
  • Lithium hydroxide

Chrome

Chrome ore and concentrates, used principally to produce ferrochrome for stainless steel.

Enquiries commonly concern

  • Lumpy chrome ore
  • Chrome concentrate
  • Ferrochrome

Platinum

A precious metal used in automotive catalysts, industrial processes, jewellery and investment.

Enquiries commonly concern

  • Platinum sponge

Benefits

What our metals and minerals broking provides

  • Grade-led discussions

Conversations are built around the grade and assay the material must meet, from the very first call.

  • Provenance in focus

Origin and chain-of-custody documentation are treated as essential, not as an afterthought.

  • Careful verification

Parties are expected to provide company information before introductions, which protects everyone involved.

  • Discretion

Commercially sensitive information is handled discreetly throughout the discussion.

How it works

How a metals and minerals enquiry progresses

Verification runs through every stage of these discussions.

  1. Define material and grade

We confirm the material, its form and the grade or assay required, along with quantity and timing.

  2. Review provenance

Origin and provenance documentation are discussed at the outset, particularly for precious metals.

  3. Confirm the parties

All parties should expect thorough verification of company information before any introduction is made.

  4. Discuss and agree next steps

Terms, sampling and assay arrangements are discussed between the parties, and the next steps are confirmed clearly.

Good to know

Sampling, assay and provenance

Mineral concentrates are usually priced on grade, confirmed through independent sampling and assay at an agreed point. Differences between assay results are typically resolved through procedures set out in the contract.

Precious metals require particularly careful attention to provenance and chain of custody. Buyers and sellers should expect detailed checks on the parties, the material and its origin before any transaction proceeds.

FAQs

Lithium, chrome and platinum: common questions

More general questions are answered on our FAQs page.

Which lithium products can I enquire about?

Enquiries commonly concern spodumene concentrate and refined lithium chemicals such as lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide. Please call to discuss your specification.

How is the grade of a mineral concentrate confirmed?

Grade is usually confirmed by independent sampling and laboratory assay. The contract normally sets out where sampling takes place and how any differences in results are resolved.

What does Cr₂O₃ content mean for chrome ore?

It is the proportion of chromium oxide in the ore and is the main measure of its grade. Higher Cr₂O₃ content generally indicates a higher-value ore.

What documentation is needed for platinum?

Platinum transactions require clear evidence of origin and chain of custody, along with full company information for every party. We discuss the specific requirements when you enquire.
