Grain, defined by quality

Grain is bought and sold against quality parameters such as moisture, protein and foreign matter, and those parameters determine its end use. Two cargoes of wheat can be suited to entirely different markets.

We discuss grain enquiries in that level of detail, covering grade, quality parameters, quantity, origin, packaging and delivery terms, so that a requirement is properly understood before any next steps are agreed.

Commodities covered

Maize

Yellow and white maize used for animal feed, food processing and industrial uses such as starch and ethanol production.

Enquiries commonly concern

  • Yellow maize for animal feed
  • White maize for food processing
  • Non-GMO maize
  • Maize for industrial processing

Wheat

Milling wheat for flour, durum wheat for pasta and semolina, and feed wheat for animal nutrition.

Enquiries commonly concern

  • Milling wheat
  • Durum wheat
  • Feed wheat

Benefits

What our grain broking provides

  • Quality first

Discussions start from the quality parameters that matter for your end use, not simply the name of the grain.

  • Origin and crop-year awareness

Origin and crop year affect quality and availability, so preferences are noted at the start.

  • Shipment options considered

Bulk vessels and containers suit different volumes and destinations. The right approach is discussed early.

  • Documentation in view

Certificates required by the importing country are raised before a discussion progresses.

How it works

How a grain enquiry progresses

Quality parameters sit at the centre of every grain discussion.

  1. Set the quality parameters

We confirm the grade and the quality parameters the grain must meet, along with its intended end use.

  2. Confirm quantity and shipment

Quantity, shipment method and timing are agreed, together with the delivery basis and destination.

  3. Confirm parties and documents

Company information and the certificates required at destination are confirmed before introductions are made.

  4. Discuss and agree next steps

Terms are discussed between buyer and seller, and the next steps are confirmed so that both sides are clear.

Good to know

Quality parameters and certification

Grain contracts usually state quality parameters, such as moisture, protein content, test weight and the permitted level of foreign matter, which are verified by independent inspection at loading.

Importing countries commonly require phytosanitary certificates and certificates of origin, and some require further documentation. Confirming these requirements early helps avoid delays.

FAQs

Maize and wheat: common questions

More general questions are answered on our FAQs page.

What is the difference between milling wheat and feed wheat?

Milling wheat meets the quality standards needed for flour production, such as protein content and baking performance. Feed wheat is used for animal nutrition and is traded against different parameters.

What quality information should a grain enquiry include?

Please include the grade and the key parameters you require, such as moisture, protein and foreign matter, together with the quantity, destination and timing.

Can grain be shipped in containers?

Grain is shipped both in bulk vessels and in containers. Bulk shipment is common for larger volumes, while containers can suit smaller quantities or particular destinations.

What is a phytosanitary certificate?

It is an official document from the exporting country confirming that a consignment of plant products meets the importing country’s plant health requirements. Most grain imports require one.
